Materials:

  • 1 used shoebox or breakfast cereal box
  • 2 wall nuts
  • 1 page of paper

Tools:

  • 1 handy Pritt stick
  • 1 pair of scissors
  • 1 ruler

Backstory:

Castanets are a popular musical instrument in Spanish, Ottoman and Swiss music.  They where even used by the romans in ancient Rome.  The Castanets make a “clicky-de-clack” sound. Today you can make your own Castanets with the following Pritt project!

Step 1

Collect all the tools and materials.

Step 2

Cut out 2 16 cm x 5 cm from your cardboard box.

Step 3

Cut out 2 additional 8 cm x 5 cm rectangles from your cardboard box.

Step 4

Cut out 2 3 cm x 10 cm rectangles from your sheet of paper.

Step 5

Now crack the walnuts so that there are two clean halves. Tip: you can do this by placing the nut on its side, so that the seam is flat down on a hard surface. Then use a hammer or small pot to tap firmly on the top of the nut, along the seam. Repeat until the nut cracks open along the seam.
Once the 2 nuts are cracked open along the seams, remove the nut and all remaining plant material from the inside.

Step 6

Fold the 2 big rectangles (16cm x 5cm) in half, as to make a crocodile mouth.

Step 7

Place a generous amount of Pritt glue on the inside of the nuts along the seams. Then glue the nuts opposite from one another, on the inside of the crocodile mouth, as close to the edge as possible. The nuts should be where the crocodile’s teeth would be. Leave to dry for 10 minutes.

Step 8

Fold the 2 small (8 cm x 5 cm) rectangles into 2 cm segments.

Step 9

Now glue the two ends of each of the small rectangular cardboard to each other. The final product should be 2 folded triangles. Wait 2 minuets for the glue to dry.

Step 10

When the 2 triangles are dried, you must glue them into the back corner of the crocodile mouth, where the tonsils would be.

Now take the two strips of paper that you have collected. Wrap 1 piece around your fingers as to find a good fit that is not too tight. Then glue the paper into place. Do the same with the other piece of paper.

Step 11

You have made finger holes with the 2 paper cylinders. Glue the paper finger holes to the top of the crocodile head where the eyes would be.

Step 12

If you like, you can decorate your Castanets. We decided to paint ours with water paint.

Tips & Tricks:

Use Pritt liquid glue to glue the nuts to the cardboard.
