The typical pirate hat is called a tricorne. It is a hat that was very popular in the 18th century and was worn by pirates, civilians and military people. It was popular for practical reasons. The turned up parts of the hat formed gutters, which funnelled rainwater away from the face and shoulders. In a time before waterproof clothing, this feature was very attractive as it resulted in the pirate getting less wet in the rain and not getting sick. Today, with the following Pritt project, you get a chance to make your very own pirate hat with parrot.
Cut out all the images from the documents that have been printed out. If you have chosen to print out the black and white version, you should colour in all the parts. Refer to the picture for ideas.
- Image 1 to image 1
- Image 2 to image 2
- Image 3 to image 3
And wait 1 minute for them all to dry
Hold image 1 and image 2 together. Then put the hat on your head and work out how big the hole in the hat needs to be in order for it to fit your head. It is important that you use your pencil to mark off the extra paper at the ends that can be stuck together.
Once you know how big the hat hole needs to be and you have used your pencil to mark the extra paper at the ends, glue the excess paper together with your handy Pritt glue stick.
Stick image 3 to your hat. Look at the finished image on the pdf and use it as a reference for what the hat should look like and where to stick image 3.
Now put the hat on your head. Place the hat at a good height, so that the hat sits on your brow. Use the paper strip image 4 to create a support inside the hat. Use your Pritt glue stick to glue the paper strip on at a height that makes the hat sit comfortably.
Roll and glue all the strips of paper marked as image 5.
Now glue the parrot images to each other using the rolled glue strips. Use the pirate hat picture image as a reference of where to stick what.
Glue the parrot and cross bones to the hat. Then use paper glue roll to glue the skull to the hat.
Cut your 50 cm piece of string in half. Glue the eye patch and tie the two ends of the string to the eye patch.
You are ready to have some pirate fun.
We would love to see pictures of your projects. You can ask your parents to post pictures on our Facebook wall at “Pritt world”.
